How do I qualify for the naturalization process?

Florida is a wonderful place to immigrate to from another country. After a few years, this place is home and you want to stay indefinitely. 

To apply for naturalization, you must pass eligibility requirements and follow a few steps. 

Steps to take to qualify for the naturalization process

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services requires applicants for naturalization to have good moral character and speak, write and read English. Additionally, you must have had a green card for the past five years and had a continuous residence. 

Once you determine you are not already a citizen and qualify for the naturalization process, you can start the application in the state you have lived for the past three months. You need to complete Form N-400 and submit it to the USCIS. Some applicants must also provide fingerprints. 

Afterward, you have to complete an interview, which is essentially a test. The USCIS then mails you their decision. If approved, you then take the Oath of Allegiance. 

Naturalization testing overview 

You must pass the naturalization test before being granted citizenship. This test consists of multiple parts that require you to have a basic understanding of civics and English. In some cases, you may qualify for a waiver or exemption. 

You can prepare for the civics test by downloading the 100-question PDF on the USCIS website. The interviewer asks you 10 of these questions. To pass, you must answer 6 of those 10 correctly. 

The English portion of the test consists of writing, speaking and reading portions. The writing and reading portions require you to write or read one sentence correctly. The officer determines what passes the speaking requirements. Find more resources on immigration here.
